The iTaukei Affairs Minister Ifereimi Vasu has highlighted a concerning increase in drug abuse in Fiji, particularly among the youth. Speaking at the Macuata Provincial Council meeting in Sasa Village, he emphasized that a significant solution to this growing issue lies in reinforcing family structures.

Minister Vasu expressed deep worries over related social problems such as rising teenage pregnancies, increasing rates of HIV, school dropouts, and violence against women. He noted that rehabilitation centers, like St Giles, have been experiencing a surge in admissions, indicating that more young individuals are seeking assistance.

He pointed out that strengthening family bonds could be pivotal in steering these youths away from substance abuse and addressing the underlying causes of these societal challenges. By focusing on family support, Vasu believes Fiji can make a significant impact on these interconnected issues.

This emphasis on family resilience provides a hopeful perspective that by nurturing strong family units, communities can combat drug abuse and its accompanying societal problems. Such initiatives could not only reduce drug dependency but also enhance the overall wellbeing of the younger generation in Fiji.

In summary, the Minister’s call for reinforcing family structures signals a proactive approach toward tackling the root causes of youth drug abuse and related social issues in the country.
