A rapid chess tournament was held at the University of Fiji’s Lautoka Campus, organized by the Fiji Chess Federation, and attracted 28 participants from the Western Division. The tournament saw young athletes displaying their talents, with top contenders Rudr Prasad, Lionel Varasi, and Navisheel Prasad winning all their games in the early rounds.
Tournament coordinator Prashil Prakash noted the strong participation from under-18 players from various schools, including Swami Vivekananda College, Korovuto College, Marist Brothers High School, and Din Bandhu College in Lautoka. Although the turnout was fewer than the expected 50 players, Prakash described the event as a positive indication of increasing interest in chess among the youth.
“The matches were thrilling, filled with unexpected turns and comebacks, signifying the growing passion for chess in Fiji,” he stated. Prakash also indicated that the event is part of a larger initiative to strengthen the chess community in the country, expressing hope that regular tournaments will help young players improve their skills.
This event is another step forward in promoting chess among the younger generation and reflects the vibrant chess culture developing in Fiji. The enthusiasm displayed by participants lays a promising foundation for the future of the sport in the region.
