Fiji’s Youth Advocate for Healing Through Truth and Reconciliation

The Alliance for Future Generations has voiced its strong backing for the establishment of Fiji’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).

Litiana Lagibalavu, a representative of the Alliance, highlighted that the TRC offers a vital chance to confront historical injustices and strive for a more inclusive and equitable future. “As young people, we are very aware of the influence that history has on our present,” Ms. Lagibalavu stated.

She pointed out that inter-generational trauma is a significant issue that cannot be overlooked, as it affects interpersonal interactions, social perceptions, and responses to challenges. Referencing insights from trauma expert Dr. Gabor Maté, she explained that trauma is not just the result of specific events but also involves the internal responses to those events.

Ms. Lagibalavu emphasized that unresolved trauma stemming from colonization, displacement, and cultural erosion continues to influence the lives and perspectives of young Fijians. She considers the TRC a crucial step toward addressing this pain and facilitating healing for both current and future generations.

“The Truth and Reconciliation Commission allows us to confront and understand this pain, initiating the healing process not only for ourselves but also for future generations,” she remarked.

As the youth of Fiji, there are concerns regarding the independence and impartiality of the commission. However, Sashi Kiran, the Chair of the TRC and Assistant Minister for Women, assured that once the TRC is endorsed by the Cabinet and established, it will operate independently and impartially from the current government.
