Fiji’s rising surfing talents, Niko Muller and Havana Kurop, showcased their skills at the inaugural Oceania Youth Cup held at Natadola Beach, where they claimed victory in the Under-18 boys’ and girls’ divisions, respectively. Their success marked a significant achievement for Team Fiji, which is increasingly making its presence felt in the competitive surfing scene of the Pacific.

The Oceania Youth Cup was the highlight of the inaugural Oceania Youth Development Program, organized by the Fiji Surfing Association in collaboration with the International Surfing Association, supported by Olympic Solidarity and the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee. This program demonstrated a commitment to nurturing young talents; 15 junior surfers from eight countries participated in a week-long training camp, receiving expert guidance from ISA coaches and seasoned Olympians.

At the forefront of the development camp alongside Kurop and Muller were fellow Fijian surfer Valerio Nawatu and head coach Lesi Navuwai. The initiative included mentorship from Olympians Michel Bourez and Leilani McGonagle, covering essential skills like contest strategy, judging, and mental preparation, which are crucial for young athletes aiming for international competitions.

Fiji’s engagement in developing youth sports across various disciplines, from surfing to sailing and athletics, showcases a robust commitment to fostering talent at the grassroots level. Recent events across sports highlight a growing initiative within Fiji to support young athletes, building pathways to international competitions and enhancing the nation’s reputation globally.

The Oceania Youth Cup is more than just a competition; it represents hope for Fijian youth in developing their skills and pursuing athletic careers. As they gain exposure and experience, these young athletes contribute to a vibrant sports culture in Fiji, further encouraging future generations to engage in sports. This focus on youth development is essential for the long-term sustainability and growth of athletics in Fiji, setting a positive foundation for the nation’s sports future.
