Thomas Setitaia, representing the SportsWorld Fiji Under-20 team, is brimming with confidence as they gear up to face Tonga in the Oceania Under-20 Rugby Championship. The 20-year-old flanker from Tovu, Totoya, currently living in New Zealand, has realized a significant goal of joining the Fiji U20 squad for 2025, a dream he is excited to pursue.
Earlier this year, Setitaia showcased his skills with Moana Pasifika in the Super Rugby U20 competition. As he transitions to the national team, he acknowledges the differences in playing styles but appreciates the energetic flair typical of Fijian rugby. “Playing in Oceania, my main aim is to focus on my role as a flanker, ensuring I do my part while relying on my teammates to deliver too,” Setitaia shared.
Reflecting on his journey, he voiced his gratitude for the chance to don the iconic white jersey of Fiji and credited his family’s support for his achievements. As a squad that optimistically features the best 28 players, Setitaia believes they are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
The Fiji U20 team is set to clash with Tonga in their opening match on Wednesday at 4 PM, taking place at King Charles Park in Nadi. This match marks a crucial moment as they defend their previous title and set the tone for the tournament ahead.
This development highlights the growing talent within Fiji’s rugby scene, with young athletes like Setitaia inspiring hope for the future of the sport in their nation. The upcoming competition presents an opportunity for these emerging stars to showcase their abilities on an international stage, stimulating excitement throughout Fiji’s passionate rugby community.
