Fijian middle-distance runner Yeshnil Karan has achieved a new personal milestone by setting a personal best in the men’s 1500m race at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, clocking in at 3 minutes 50.77 seconds. This performance surpasses his previous best of 3 minutes 51.14 seconds, set at the Australian Championships in Perth earlier this year.

Karan was the sole runner in his heat, as well as across all four heats, to achieve a personal best despite the challenging warm and humid conditions of the early morning. His race strategy was tactical, beginning with a swift 100m in 14.5 seconds, followed by a temporarily slowed second lap of 64.5 seconds, a strong third lap of 61.9 seconds, and an impressive final surge covering the last 600m in 89.7 seconds.

Reflecting on his performance, Karan expressed his satisfaction, acknowledging the experience of competing at his first World Championships where he faced world and Olympic champions. “The last 600m was really fast, and I’m pleased with my performance,” he stated, especially given his preparation was limited to six weeks in Brisbane after returning to Fiji briefly for the birth of his second son.

Coach Atma Maharaj praised Karan’s effort, highlighting it as a demonstration of his potential and as an excellent introduction on the world stage. As Karan looks ahead, his focus shifts to preparing for the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, aiming for a stronger build-up and further achievements.

Karan’s journey remains an inspiring testament to his dedication and talent. Over his career, he has consistently demonstrated improvement, breaking several personal and national records, such as his national record-breaking performances in the 10,000m, 5,000m, and other long-distance events. His impressive achievements serve as an inspiration for Fijian athletics, symbolizing perseverance and the pursuit of excellence in the face of challenges.

Yeshnil Karan’s commitment and success emphasize his role as a beacon of hope and a role model for aspiring Fijian athletes, demonstrating that through hard work and determination, remarkable achievements on the global stage are possible. This not only elevates his status within the athletics community but also inspires the next generation of Fijian athletes to strive for greatness.
