The Commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, Sevuloni Naucikidi, has reported a concerning rise in the incarceration rate within the provinces of Rewa, Naitasiri, and Tailevu, with Tailevu consistently showing the highest number of offenders over the past five years. In light of this issue, the Fiji Corrections Service is encouraging public participation in its annual Yellow Ribbon Walk, set to take place in Nausori Town this Saturday.
This event aims to raise awareness about the rehabilitation of former inmates and their reintegration into society, which often faces significant hurdles due to stigma. Naucikidi has termed this societal stigma as the “second prison,” highlighting how such barriers can hinder ex-offenders from leading normal lives and contribute to a cycle of reoffending. The Yellow Ribbon Walk will commence at Ratu Cakobau Park at 5:00 am, concluding at Syria Park at 6:30 am.
This initiative aligns with broader efforts by the Fiji Corrections Service to enhance rehabilitation measures and reduce recidivism rates. Consistent with recent statements from former Commissioner Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, who advocated for structured rehabilitation and transparency, the focus on community engagement through such events is critical. Recent plans initiated by the FCS have shown promise in fostering a supportive environment for inmates to reintegrate positively into their communities.
As Fiji continues to address its correctional challenges, community involvement plays an essential role in transforming the lives of ex-offenders, ultimately paving the way for safer communities. The upcoming walk not only symbolizes hope and support for rehabilitation but also signifies a community united in promoting second chances for those who have served their time.
