The Yasawa Islands in Fiji are now on the path to becoming a hub for sports tourism, thanks to the recent Grassroots Fiji Nacula 7s tournament held last month. Organized by the Fiji Sports Council, this event attracted local rugby teams, enthusiastic villagers, and tourists from nearby resorts such as Blue Lagoon Beach Resort and Coral View Island Resort, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with energy and cultural exchange.

Over two days, the matches showcased not only the impressive rugby skills of the participating teams but also demonstrated how such sporting events can have a significant economic and social impact on rural communities. Fiji Sports Council acting CEO Gilbert Vakalalabure observed that the event turned into an authentic experience for tourists, who mingled with locals, celebrated the games, and gained a deeper appreciation of Fijian culture. Vakalalabure stated, “This is the kind of experience that stays with people — and it’s something you can’t package in a brochure.”

Local residents felt the positive influences as well, with increased visitors to homestays and local shops. Interest in Fijian rugby culture surged, prompting many tourists to extend their stays to fully immerse themselves in the event. Lavinia Naivalu, the Mata Ni Tikina of Nacula, articulated that the tournament represented more than just a series of rugby games; it was a celebration of pride and unity, showcasing the capability of remote communities to host spectacular events.

With the success of the Nacula 7s, there are hopes to expand the Grassroots Fiji Series into other maritime and highland communities, which could further elevate Fiji’s profile as a destination for sports tourism. This expansion reflects a commitment not only to cultivating rugby talents but also to fostering community ties and promoting local economic development.

The tournament aligns with previous grassroots events, like the Yalovata Sevens, which similarly emphasized the strong connection between sports and community in Fiji. The success of these initiatives signals a hopeful future for the sports tourism sector in Fiji, showcasing the ability of sporting events to uplift communities and nurture local cultures.

This development in the Yasawa Islands should encourage ongoing support and investment into local sports initiatives, potentially leading to a cycle of growth for both tourism and community engagement in rural areas.
