The welfare of both foreign and local workers aboard vessels operating in Fiji’s waters has become a focal point of concern. Employment Minister Agni Deo-Singh addressed the issue, confirming that the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) is responsible for monitoring conditions for foreign workers on foreign-registered ships in response to allegations of labor standards violations.
Minister Deo-Singh stated that MSAF collaborates with the Employment Ministry to facilitate joint inspections whenever complaints arise. He acknowledged the nature of the work as precarious, emphasizing the unique challenges faced by these workers at sea. “It’s not an easy one; they are out there in the sea on foreign-registered ships and vessels, and we are still navigating how we can best address that issue,” he remarked.
In conjunction with these efforts, there are ongoing plans to establish a Fisheries Union through the Fiji Trade Union Congress and its associates, aimed at strengthening the collective bargaining power of workers in the fisheries sector. The International Labour Organization is also lending support to enhance labor protections within this industry, which aims to safeguard the rights of local fishermen operating on both local and international vessels.
Additionally, Minister Deo-Singh confirmed that investigations are being conducted regarding complaints about the mistreatment of Bangladeshi workers on a cane farm in Labasa. He reported that the investigation’s findings have been handed to the Director of Labour Standards for follow-up actions.
The commitment to improving working conditions, particularly for vulnerable migrant and local workers, remains a core priority for the government. This dedication reinforces the need for fair labor practices across all sectors and indicates a proactive approach to ensuring that all workers are treated with dignity and respect.
In light of recent initiatives, there is hope that continued efforts in legislation and labor advocacy will lead to improved conditions for workers across Fiji’s diverse industries.
