The 2025 Fiji National Rugby League Women’s competition is gearing up to be a remarkable event, featuring a record 11 teams competing for the championship. Launched recently at Albert Park in Suva, this year’s competition introduces three new teams: the Saru Dragons, Nabua Broncos, and Nadera Panthers. This expansion adds an exciting dynamic to the league, where six teams hail from the east and five from the west.
Defending champions, the Police Blues, are poised to defend their title against a host of motivated challengers eager to make their mark in the league. Fiji National Rugby League chairman Akuila Masi thanked the Australian Government for its prominent support in advancing women’s rugby league across the Pacific, expressing his belief that this backing is essential for the growth of the sport.
Masi emphasized, “The competition will feature two full rounds, with the top eight teams moving on to the quarterfinals.” The tremendous interest in women’s rugby league in Fiji reflects a positive trend, as evidenced by the increasing participation rates. Earlier articles have reported on the strides made by teams like the Lami Steelers, demonstrating the emerging talent and competitive spirit among young women in the sport.
Andrew Lepani, Senior Advisor to the PacificAus Sports Program, echoed the sentiment, pointing out that sport has the unique ability to bring communities together, thereby fostering growth in the region. This collaboration underscores the significance of sports in developing stronger connections and opportunities for female athletes in Fiji.
As the competition kicks off, there’s a collective anticipation for the thrilling matches ahead, and hope that this year will showcase the best of women’s rugby league in Fiji while inspiring future generations of female athletes. The growing aspirations manifest in the league’s activities signal a promising future for women’s participation in the sport, propelling Fiji’s rugby league to new heights on both local and international stages.
