Women entrepreneurs are increasingly influential in shaping Fiji’s workforce, particularly within the digital and green sectors. Vera Chute, a representative from the Women Entrepreneurs Business Council (WEBC), highlighted this trend during a recent forum, noting that various programs are aiding women from home-based businesses to medium-sized enterprises. However, significant barriers persist, especially regarding access to finance, with many women encountering high loan costs and stringent collateral requirements.

Chute mentioned the “Bridge the Gap” program, designed to empower women and provide necessary support. Alongside this, Michelle Chand from CADMAS emphasized the need to eliminate the digital divide, advocating for equipping women with essential skills to thrive in today’s economy. This sentiment echoes calls from other leaders in Fiji who stress the importance of confidence building and mentorship for women in sectors like technology and finance.

Similar discussions have taken place recently regarding the increasing recognition of women’s roles in entrepreneurship, particularly at events like the Northern Women Expo, which gathered over 200 women, showcasing their contributions to the economy. Such initiatives reflect a growing commitment towards gender equality and empowerment through collaboration across various sectors.

Furthermore, the recent launch of the Women in Tech Fiji chapter represents a significant stride towards building a support network for young women in the tech field. There is a sense of hope and optimism as Fiji moves towards a more inclusive future, where women’s entrepreneurial capabilities are recognized and nurtured, ultimately benefiting the broader society.

This positive atmosphere indicates that ongoing efforts to empower women will likely drive meaningful advancements in gender equality across many sectors, paving the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for all in Fiji.
