Watisoni Naqau, a 21-year-old rugby referee from Votua village in Lekutu, Bua, has been chosen to officiate at the upcoming 2024 Oceania 7s tournament, which will take place in Honiara, Solomon Islands, on December 7-8. This significant opportunity marks Naqau’s debut on the international refereeing scene.
Naqau’s journey into officiating began during his childhood while attending Lekutu Primary and Secondary Schools. His love for rugby was fostered by watching local club matches in Bua, where he developed an interest in the referees and their role in the game. “I started watching the officials and following them around to learn how they managed the games,” he reflected.
The turning point in his career came when the Fiji Rugby Referees Association recognized his potential and invited him to a refereeing certification course. “I was fortunate to be invited by Fiji Rugby officials to undergo a course for certification in refereeing,” Naqau noted, marking the start of his officiating journey.
Motivated by witnessing Fijian referees perform at international competitions, Naqau aspired to follow in their footsteps. “I had always admired the referees from Fiji officiating overseas and set my mind on doing that as well in the not-so-distant future,” he stated.
Since earning his certification, Naqau has officiated in various local tournaments, including the Vodafone Vanua Cup, Skipper Cup, and the Fiji Bitter 7s series. These experiences have enhanced his confidence and honed his skills, ultimately leading to this prestigious opportunity at the Oceania 7s tournament.
Grateful for the support he has received, Naqau expressed his appreciation to the Fiji Rugby Referees Association, stating, “I thank them for believing in my ability and giving me the chance to move onto a regional competition. I look forward to even bigger opportunities in the near future.”
This achievement reflects not only Naqau’s dedication but also the growing talent in Fijian rugby officiating, suggesting a bright future for the sport in the region.
In summary, Watisoni Naqau’s selection for the Oceania 7s illustrates the importance of nurturing young talent in sports and the possibilities that arise from hard work and passion. His journey serves as an inspiration to others in the community, showing that dedication can lead to remarkable opportunities on an international stage.
