The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has provided a comprehensive update on water supply restoration efforts across the nation following recent adverse weather conditions.
In the Central Eastern Region, water supply systems in Waila and Viria are functioning normally, while the Tamavua system continues to struggle due to high turbidity levels at the Waimanu raw water intake and Tamavua Water Treatment Plant (WTP). Although water quality has improved, the ongoing need for frequent backwashing of filters has hindered production capacity. To aid residents facing shortages, 38 water trucks are currently operating in affected areas.
Restoration of water supply has been successful in communities including Bel Air, Mead Road, Rewa Street, Tip Top, MM15B, CWM, Tacirua, and Nasinu, with complete restoration expected shortly. However, residents in areas such as Lami, Wairua, Wailoku, Tacirua, Colo-i-Suva, Sakoca, and Nukubuco are still experiencing disruptions.
In the Western Region, water supply remains stable in locations like Rakiraki, Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Nadi. The Sigatoka system is recovering from significant flooding that affected its raw water intake, with full restoration anticipated imminently. Meanwhile, the Keiyasi system is still partially offline due to turbidity challenges, but local residents have access to water carting services.
In the Northern Region, the Labasa system is stabilizing following recent repairs, while other areas such as Seaqaqa, Savusavu, Nabouwalu, and Taveuni are functioning normally.
WAF officials are focusing on normalizing water treatment processes at the Tamavua and Matovo WTPs, and they are committed to attaining full restoration of services swiftly. The authority has also encouraged residents to conserve water as repairs continue.
Historically, WAF has addressed ongoing challenges posed by the weather, especially concerning the maintenance of operational capacity at the Tamavua WTP due to rising turbidity levels. These proactive measures from WAF demonstrate a strong commitment to community health and safety, with the deployment of water trucks and continuous monitoring reflecting their dedication.
The update underscores the resilience and collaborative spirit of the community, encouraging patience and proactive water usage strategies during this crucial recovery period. For assistance, customers can contact WAF via phone or email and are encouraged to follow WAF’s social media for real-time updates.
