Heavy rainfall associated with Tropical Cyclone Rae has significantly increased turbidity levels in the water supply systems, affecting the Water Authority of Fiji’s (WAF) operations at the Tamavua Water Treatment Plant. As a consequence, many residents in parts of Suva are experiencing disruptions in their water supply.
In light of these challenging conditions, WAF has made the decision to reduce the raw water inflow from 76 million liters to 66 million liters per day. This adjustment is essential for maintaining water quality standards while managing the plant’s treatment capacity. However, this reduction has led to critically low reservoir levels since last night, directly impacting water availability in multiple areas.
The affected locations include:
– **Tamavua Reservoir:** CWM Hospital, elevated zones of Lami (Kalekana, Qauia, Delainavesi, Osonabukete, Beninaiveli), and the Waiqanake District, which includes the local school.
– **Dokanisuva Reservoir:** All regions serviced by Dokanisuva, including Princes Road from Tacirua SDA to the Khalsa Road junction and residents near the Nagatugatu Reservoir.
– **Colo-i-Suva Reservoir:** Areas such as Marshall Rd, Crest Chicken Ltd, and Princes Rd leading up to Sawani Hill.
– **Tacirua Reservoir:** Coverage extends from Princes Road to various neighborhoods within the Tacirua vicinity.
To mitigate the impact, WAF is taking proactive measures by managing water supply through valve operations and alternating between different supply sources to control turbidity. Additionally, 45 water carting trucks have been deployed to deliver temporary relief to residents in the affected areas.
WAF has expressed regret for the disruptions and is dedicated to restoring production to normal levels as soon as turbidity stabilizes. Residents are encouraged to store enough water for their essential needs, minimize non-essential usage, and ensure that any stored water is clean and covered.
As conditions improve and production increases, WAF is committed to resuming regular water supply services. This situation underscores the importance of community preparedness and cooperation to effectively navigate through such challenges, prioritizing public health and safety during adverse weather events.
