Fiji's Water Revolution: Unlocking Sustainable Solutions for All

Fiji’s Water Revolution: 31 Projects Transform Access to Clean Water

The Water Authority of Fiji (WAF) has marked a significant achievement by completing 31 vital water projects across the nation, including the notable $14.8 million Waila Pipeline Project, which serves over 330,000 residents. Ro Filipe Tuisawau, Minister for Public Works, highlighted key developments such as pipeline extensions totaling 31.57 kilometers and improvements to the River Water Supply Scheme.

These achievements are underscored by WAF’s proactive measures, including the installation of backup generator systems at 14 major power stations to ensure a reliable supply of water and power during peak demand periods. Tuisawau emphasized the importance of this infrastructure in maintaining uninterrupted services in urban areas.

In a notable effort to enhance operational efficiency, WAF has successfully decreased non-revenue water (NRW) from 47 percent to 45 percent, signifying millions of liters saved each day. This reduction reflects improved leak management and better water usage practices. WAF has also fully utilized its $133 million capital expenditure budget for the first time, enabling essential upgrades in wastewater management, pipeline replacements, and enhanced access to water in rural regions.

Targeting rural and isolated maritime areas, WAF has completed 28 rural water projects that benefit 7,200 people who previously experienced unreliable water supply. This initiative, costing $4.5 million, includes the creation of new water schemes and the installation of standpipes and showers, thereby ensuring safe and dependable access to water for these communities.

Additionally, WAF’s rainwater harvesting initiative, which has deployed over 303,000 water tanks across four divisions, has significantly supported areas affected by drought, further showcasing the organization’s commitment to sustainable practices.

With ongoing investments in Fiji’s water infrastructure, WAF is not only addressing immediate water supply challenges but also building resilience against climate impacts and striving to ensure that clean water is accessible to all citizens. These initiatives exemplify a positive direction toward sustainable water management and community empowerment amid ongoing environmental challenges.
