Fiji is urgently focusing on improving its waste management systems, as emphasized by Trade Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica. At the recent Global Recycling Day event, he conveyed that recycling has become essential in the face of growing environmental challenges tied to urbanization and consumerism.
Kamikamica underscored the importance of collaboration among businesses, policymakers, and communities to empower waste collectors and enhance recycling infrastructure. During this event, the “I Recycle” program was launched at Churchill Park, marking it as the first sports facility in Fiji to implement a comprehensive waste management initiative. The Minister urged other venues and businesses to adopt similar sustainable practices.
The government is dedicated to expanding recycling centers, enhancing landfill management, and educating the community on waste segregation. Kamikamica highlighted that policies must not only foster sustainability but also promote economic growth by transforming waste into economic opportunities. He called for immediate action from municipal councils, businesses, and citizens, asserting that discussions are no longer sufficient.
These views resonate with sentiments expressed by other officials, including Amitesh Deo, founder of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, who has called for a collective responsibility in waste management along with better community understanding of disposal practices. Additionally, Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua has expressed her concerns about littering in Fiji, emphasizing the necessity of civic pride and collective community action to confront these pressing issues.
There is optimism for a cleaner future, as community-driven initiatives like the I Recycle program aim to cultivate environmental awareness. With ongoing education and collaboration, Fiji has the potential to achieve a cleaner and more sustainable environment, benefiting present and future generations. The collective efforts to engage citizens and foster a culture of environmental stewardship could lead to significant improvements in waste management practices nationwide.
