Fiji continues to grapple with significant waste management challenges, resulting in the proliferation of landfills, dumpsites, littering, and burning. This issue was highlighted by Amitesh Deo, the Founder and CEO of the Pacific Recycling Foundation, during the launch of the “I Recycle” initiative in Suva.
Deo emphasized that a major factor contributing to the problem is a lack of understanding regarding waste management and individual responsibilities. He noted, “Most individuals in this country do not realize that there is a shared responsibility… the idea that packaging should reach the right place is not well understood.” This mindset has led to pervasive littering and improper waste disposal practices.
He pointed out that while some materials, such as scrap metal, are recyclable, plastics pose a significant environmental threat, contributing to the waste that ultimately ends up in landfills due to a perceived lack of value.
Maciu Nalumisa, the Minister for Housing and Local Government, echoed this sentiment, stressing that effective waste management should be a community-wide responsibility. He suggested that increasing awareness in schools and communities could help instill better waste practices among the population.
Following the initiative’s launch, the Pacific Recycling Foundation hopes to enhance the implementation and evaluation of waste management procedures across the nation. As these efforts unfold, there remains hope that a shift in mindset and practices can lead to a cleaner and more sustainable Fiji.
This initiative signifies a vital step toward addressing Fiji’s waste management issues, highlighting how community involvement and education can foster a healthier environment.
