For many young individuals in Fiji, the future remains uncertain, often overshadowed by challenges and struggles. However, a small yet determined faith-based organization is striving to change that narrative. This week, at Ratu Sukuna Park in Suva, the Voice of Youth successfully held its inaugural significant public event, a youth-driven health expo that gathered young people, NGOs, and community leaders.
Designed as a pilot project, this initiative aimed to unite various non-governmental organizations dedicated to promoting healthy living and positive lifestyles among Fiji’s youth. Poasa Batiratu, the 28-year-old executive chairperson of Voice of Youth and chief organizer of the event, highlighted the organization’s commitment to empowering young people through targeted, community-oriented initiatives. He emphasized the urgency of early intervention and positive engagement, as he observed that many youths are heading down a destructive path.
“Our aim is to distract youths with something beneficial and provide them with a sense of purpose,” Mr. Batiratu stated. The participating NGOs not only disseminated health and social information but also offered training opportunities to help young people contribute meaningfully to public service. Notably, the organization engaged 100 youth volunteers to support its efforts on the ground.
In less than a year of operation, Voice of Youth has experienced remarkable growth, reflected in the surging participation in its programs. The training sessions provided have equipped participants with practical and transferable skills, including data interpretation and conducting consultations.
Additionally, the organization has been running awareness sessions that address crucial social issues such as mental health, drug awareness, and HIV/AIDS. These sessions included talks from notable figures like Police Inspector Donu and psychologist Leba Kania, alongside representatives from HIV awareness programs.
The successful health expo serves as a promising start for Voice of Youth’s mission to cultivate resilient, informed, and engaged young leaders. With plans to expand this initiative nationwide by the end of the year, the organization is positioning itself as a vital player in the movement toward a healthier and more engaged youth population in Fiji.
