Valelawa villagers in Dreketi, Vanua Levu, are facing significant challenges as they continue to live without electricity. This situation compels residents to rely on lanterns, candles, and solar-powered lights for their daily activities. Local resident Sonam Devi highlighted the difficulties this creates, particularly for the education of children. She lamented that the lack of adequate lighting after sunset hampers her children’s ability to study effectively, forcing them to complete their homework during daylight hours.

Many families in Valelawa find that without access to electricity, their productivity is limited, affecting their overall quality of life. Ms. Devi expressed her hopes for the future, stating, “We keep praying for the day when power will finally reach Valelawa,” as she and her community yearn for a solution that could enhance their living conditions and educational prospects.

This situation mirrors challenges faced by other communities in Fiji, such as the students and teachers at Domonisavu Primary School in Nayarabale, Cakaudrove, where the school has been without electricity for over seven years. Like Valelawa, many families in that area also struggle with educational limitations due to inadequate light sources. The situation at Domonisavu highlights the urgent need for government intervention, as the absence of electricity not only disrupts learning but also discourages students from engaging in their studies after dark.

Communities across Fiji remain hopeful that initiatives will be taken to address these pressing issues, as access to electricity is vital for educational development and quality of life. Improved infrastructure can transform lives, allowing for greater opportunities and the potential for a brighter future for children and families alike.
