The Sportsworld Fiji Under-20 rugby team is now in the final stages of their preparations for the upcoming Super Rugby U20 competition, set to take place in New Zealand. In an interview with SUNsports, assistant coach Saiasi Fuli shared insights into the team’s centralized training program, which has brought together players from western Fiji to Suva for focused practice.
Fuli emphasized the thorough support provided for the players, including accommodation and meals during training. He noted that this week is dedicated to enhancing players’ core skills and conditioning, highlighting the integration of both local and overseas athletes within the squad.
“This is one of the youngest U20 teams ever assembled in Fiji,” Fuli remarked, acknowledging the absence of this year’s Junior World Trophy. This situation has allowed the coaching staff to prioritize the development of younger players, particularly those aged 17 to 19, as they prepare for competitive tournaments like the Super 20s next month.
The coaching vision includes a two-year developmental program aimed at ensuring the team is ready to compete at higher levels once the World Rugby Trophy resumes. The intent is to foster adaptability and performance under tournament pressures, thereby nurturing the next generation of Fijian rugby talent.
Overall, this initiative reflects a strategic focus on youth development in Fijian rugby, aiming to transition young players into readiness for international competition, which bodes well for the sport’s future in the region.
