The Fiji Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) is set to play a crucial role in addressing the nation’s past political upheavals, including identifying individuals—politicians, business figures, chiefs, and religious leaders—who participated in or supported coups. This emphasis on truth was highlighted by the Leader of Opposition, Inia Seruiratu, during a recent Parliament session.
The Fiji TRC Bill 2024 received approval in Parliament, with 33 votes in favor and 15 against. With this new legislation, the commission is empowered to summon individuals to provide their accounts, which is seen as pivotal for the integrity of the reconciliation process. Mr. Seruiratu emphasized the need for transparency, urging that key players behind the coups—especially politicians—must be held accountable.
The steering committee for the TRC is headed by Assistant Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, who assured that the commission will have the necessary legal powers to invite testimonies from those implicated in past events. The diverse committee includes figures from various governmental sectors, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to this sensitive issue.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka noted that the Bill was crafted following extensive consultations with both victims and perpetrators, gaining substantial support across different demographics. He believes the TRC will aid in fostering healing and reconciliation among the Fijian people, reaffirming the commitment to truth-telling regarding the political turmoil that has affected the country.
The commission will consist of five members appointed by the President, ensuring its independence and integrity as mandated by law.
