The Truth and Reconciliation Steering Committee Chair and Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran, emphasizes that the primary focus of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in Fiji is to facilitate healing from past political crises rather than to punish those involved in previous coups. According to Kiran, the coups that occurred in 1987, 2000, and 2006 included a broad spectrum of individuals, from those directly involved to those who supported or enabled the actions taken.

Kiran clarified that the TRC is not about assigning blame but rather about understanding the underlying causes of these events, addressing the trauma experienced by many, and fostering an environment conducive to national healing. She pointed out that members of all communities have faced pain and suffering, highlighting the importance of allowing Fijians to share their stories—whether publicly or privately. This initiative aims to document the effects of past events on individuals, families, and communities alike.

The recommendations that arise from the TRC will be submitted to the President and the government, focusing on strengthening institutions, preventing the recurrence of conflicts, and ensuring that similar crises are avoided in the future. Kiran asserts, “TRC’s purpose is not seeking blame, not looking for perpetrators,” clarifying that, while legal action is a separate matter, the objective of the TRC is to promote healing and understanding.

Kiran also emphasized the importance of imparting lessons to future generations. She acknowledged the differing perspectives among youth, particularly in rural areas, who are keen on addressing the traumas inherited from their parents and grandparents. In contrast, some urban youths are advocating for moving on from the past. The TRC is described as a crucial mechanism for Fiji to reflect on its history, tackle ongoing challenges, and strive toward building a more unified and resilient nation.

This approach reflects a commitment to healing and reconciliation, which can ultimately lead to a brighter future for all Fijians as they navigate the complexities of their shared history.
