Fiji is actively advancing the implementation of Protocol II under the EU-Pacific States Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (IEPA), which involves meeting the rules of origin criteria necessary for products to qualify for preferential trade treatment. This initiative allows Fijian exporters to enjoy duty-free and quota-free access to European Union (EU) markets.

During the recent IEPA Trade Committee Meeting in Brussels, Fiji’s Ministry of Trade permanent secretary Shaheen Ali presented an update on the country’s progress in customs modernization, trade efficiency, and international cooperation, aligning with global best practices. Among the key achievements mentioned was the successful deployment of ASYCUDA World, a comprehensive electronic customs management system that significantly reduces clearance times and enhances overall trade facilitation.

Fiji has also introduced expedited clearance protocols for perishable goods, including pre-arrival processing and risk-based customs clearance, strictly aimed at increasing efficiency for exporters. The nation has strengthened international cooperation by committing to mutual administrative assistance in customs matters, actively fostering regional trade frameworks. Furthermore, the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS) has improved compliance measures through digital transformation.

In a statement, Mr. Ali emphasized, “Fiji continues to lead by example in trade facilitation, ensuring our exporters remain competitive and benefit from streamlined, transparent, and efficient customs processes.” He also highlighted the ongoing technical support from the EU and regional partnerships as pivotal in driving inclusive economic growth and expanding Fiji’s global trade potential.

These developments underscore Fiji’s commitment to enhancing trade relations under the IEPA framework, with positive implications for local exporters and the overall economy as it strategically leverages its position within the global market. The collaborative efforts within the Pacific region and with the EU promise to uplift economic benchmarks for Fiji, providing optimism for a more integrated and prosperous trade environment.
