The opening competition of the Athletics Fiji season kicked off successfully yesterday, attracting nine clubs and six secondary schools to the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva. Over 100 athletes participated, driven by their aspirations to secure a spot in the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

Albert Miller, head coach of Athletics Fiji, pointed out the competition’s critical role in preparing athletes for future events, including prestigious meets like the Coca Cola Games and Oceania Games. He emphasized the importance of this event as an opportunity for athletes to assess their fitness levels and demonstrate their skills.

“This competition presents a valuable chance for those aiming for places in the Commonwealth Games to test themselves. It’s also a great opportunity for preparations leading up to the Coca Cola Games and Oceania Games,” Miller remarked. He highlighted that hosting this first competition serves to familiarize athletes with the season’s dynamics.

The event featured a variety of selective competitions, including the 100m, 50m for younger participants, Long Jump, Triple Jump, Javelin, Discus, and High Jump. This methodical approach allows athletes to ease back into competitive form while incrementally ramping up to more challenging events as the season unfolds.

Among the notable achievements was Isoa Vunianamatana, who cleared the two-meter mark in the high jump, marking a significant milestone in his athletic journey. “This accomplishment signifies promising progress for Vunianamatana and sets a positive tone for the rest of the season,” Miller stated.

As Athletics Fiji looks ahead, there are plans to host more competitions that will enable athletes to refine their skills and strategies further. The anticipation builds for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2, promising to be an exciting chapter for Fiji’s athletes.
