Local small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are being encouraged to leverage their local resources to tap into Fiji’s burgeoning tourism sector. Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, highlighted numerous opportunities for local entrepreneurs to establish tourist-based businesses. He emphasized that the involvement of the entire community is essential for maximizing tourism’s benefits.
Gavoka expressed satisfaction in observing local citizens taking initiative in the tourism industry, stating that the government is actively working to create a supportive environment for these enterprises. He pointed out that there are funding options available for these businesses and expressed delight in seeing communities capitalize on such offers.
“Tourism is not just for the operators; it’s for everyone,” Gavoka remarked, stressing the importance of inclusive participation in the industry. He indicated that tourism’s success in Fiji, which currently contributes 40% to the national GDP, relies on the active involvement of local communities. He challenged the question of how the significant revenues from tourism are being distributed back to the community, underlining the necessity for direct economic benefits to flow to all stakeholders involved.
In conjunction with previous government initiatives like the ‘Na Vualiku Program,’ which focuses on promoting sustainable tourism development in less-trafficked regions, this approach aims to foster greater inclusivity and ensure the continuous growth of tourism in Fiji. Recent reports reveal that these initiatives are enhancing access to benefits for local communities, promoting practices that contribute positively to sustainable development.
By prioritizing community engagement in tourism, Fiji is poised for a brighter future where economic growth will not only improve livelihoods but also cultivate community pride. This ongoing effort reflects a strategic commitment to uplifting local economies and maximizing the potential of sustainable tourism across all provinces.
