Fiji triumphed over the Solomon Islands in a penalty shootout, winning 6-5 after a tightly contested group match in the 2024 OFC Men’s Beach Soccer Nations Cup held in Honiara today. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, leading to the shootout to determine the winner.
Fiji’s goals in regular time came from captain Tevita Waranaivalu and Steven Dean. Waranaivalu also successfully converted the first penalty for Fiji. Other successful penalty takers included Dean, Adriu Nabose, France Catarogo, along with goalkeepers Sanaila Waqanicakau and Ilisoni Koro.
Despite the victory, Fiji’s chances to compete in Saturday’s final were dashed, as the final will feature defending champions Tahiti against the Solomon Islands. Earlier in the tournament, Fiji faced defeats against Papua New Guinea (8-6) and Tahiti (10-1).
