The Fiji Taxi Association is advocating for a constructive dialogue with the Minister for Transport, Ro Filipe Tuisawau, addressing the growing issue of unlicensed or ‘pari’ (pirate) taxis that threaten the livelihoods of licensed taxi operators. President of the association, Ashwin Lal, emphasizes the urgency of the situation, expressing that the rise of these unregulated vehicles could severely impact the taxi industry in Fiji.
Lal stated, “Every industry has to be protected,” urging the minister to safeguard the taxi sector rather than jeopardize it. Recently, Minister Tuisawau announced a plan to regulate these pirate taxis, which has sparked significant discussion within the industry. Lal believes a face-to-face meeting with the minister could lead to better outcomes, as he recognizes Tuisawau as an “understandable minister” willing to listen.
Concerns regarding ‘pari’ taxis extend beyond economic implications; restriction in licensed taxi availability could lead to more congestion in urban areas while creating a service void in rural locations. Lal urged those interested in joining the transport sector to consider alternative options, such as operating buses or minibuses, instead of entering the competitive taxi market.
The call for regulation comes amid an acknowledgment by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) of the lack of enforcement against illegal taxis, which has posed challenges for licensed operators. This discussion aligns with previous sentiments echoed in the transport sector regarding the need for a structured approach to enhance safety and service standards.
While challenges remain, the ongoing discourse presents hope for reform within the taxi industry, aimed at ensuring a safer and more reliable transportation framework. By fostering collaboration among taxi operators, government officials, and regulatory bodies, a balanced and sustainable solution may emerge, benefiting both drivers and passengers across Fiji’s transport network.
The initiative for reform signals a proactive stance by authorities to ensure that Fiji’s transport system can effectively meet the diverse needs of the community, hence cultivating an environment where licensed operators can thrive alongside necessary reforms in the industry.
