Fiji’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the importance of administrative simplicity in tax systems during a recent address focused on the Fiji Revenue and Customs Services’ (FRCS) initiative to identify and register businesses through the new Business Management System (BMS). Prasad underscored that the FRCS intends to roll out the BMS without placing undue burdens on businesses, ensuring the process is efficient and straightforward.

He expressed confidence in the integrity of the majority of Fiji’s business community, stating, “Most businesses in this country do an honest day’s job. They pay their taxes. They contribute to the economy.” The minister argued that tax compliance should be rooted in responsibility and flexibility, rather than punitive measures. “Compliance, from my point of view, must be responsible. It must be flexible,” he remarked.

The BMS is part of the broader tax reform measures outlined in the upcoming 2024–2025 National Budget, which aims to enhance revenue collection and simplify tax administration. Prasad encouraged collaboration between the FRCS and businesses to facilitate a smooth registration process and alleviate any concerns about new compliance measures.

This initiative aligns with the FRCS’s ongoing efforts to modernize tax administration presented in earlier communications, such as the ongoing implementation of the Value-Added Tax Monitoring System (VMS), which is also focused on engaging small and medium enterprises in the digital economy. These steps are indicative of a growing commitment by the Fiji government to refine its tax framework, foster business engagement, and work transparently with its citizens.

In conclusion, the moves made by Fiji’s financial leadership signal a positive outlook for the nation’s economic environment, aiming to create stronger tax compliance while promoting fair practices that support the growth and stability of local businesses.
