The Fiji Government is currently confronting over $100 million in unpaid taxes, as highlighted by the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service (FRCS). During the launch of its Compliance Improvement Strategy (CIS) for 2025-2028, FRCS Chief Executive Officer Udit Singh emphasized the introduction of innovative strategies to enhance tax compliance, including the monitoring of social media and lifestyle audits. The FRCS’s VAT Compliance Campaign and VAT Quick Wins initiatives have already recovered approximately $45 million in liabilities and collected around $30 million in cash.

Mr. Singh noted that since July 1, 2024, FRCS has identified nearly $100 million in tax liabilities, alongside $7 million in penalties, all of which contribute to the reported outstanding tax figure. The recently concluded tax amnesty program, which ran from April until July 2025, enabled close to 40,000 tax returns to be facilitated and brought in roughly $75 million to state funds. This amnesty allowed individuals and businesses to settle their tax dues without penalties, although FRCS has firmly decided against extending this deadline, leading to impending enforcement actions against non-compliant taxpayers.

The need for rigorous compliance measures has never been clearer, with the FRCS now entering the enforcement phase of their strategy. As part of broader efforts to enhance Fiji’s financial governance, the government remains committed to fostering a more transparent and equitable tax system. These initiatives suggest a forward-looking approach to addressing tax compliance and evasion issues, heralding a more robust economic future for Fiji.

These developments in tax collection and compliance are not only crucial for improving public services but also for laying the groundwork for sustainable economic growth. By strengthening tax governance, the Fiji government reinforces its commitment to accountability and a fairer financial environment for all citizens.
