Tanoa Plaza Hotel has achieved a remarkable milestone by diverting 32 tonnes of recyclable waste from landfills over the past decade, establishing itself as a leader in sustainable urban hospitality in Fiji and the wider Pacific region. This commendable effort has been recognized by the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), which applauded the hotel for its commitment to responsible waste management.

The hotel has collaborated with Waste Recyclers Fiji Limited to ensure a consistent practice of segregating and recycling waste that would otherwise contribute to the Naboro landfill. PRF Founder Amitesh Deo highlighted this initiative as a testament to how even city hotels with limited space can actively contribute to environmental protection through dedicated and practical efforts.

In addition to its recycling initiatives, Tanoa Plaza Hotel has embraced a garden-to-table philosophy, using produce grown on-site, and has actively reduced single-use plastics by transitioning from bottled water to floor-based dispensers. Furthermore, the hotel has implemented visible waste-sorting systems in guest, conference, and staff areas to enhance environmental consciousness and encourage participation in sustainability practices.

Moreover, Tanoa Plaza Hotel has worked alongside PRF to promote recycling awareness programs that align with Fiji’s Collection Pillars of Recycling, thus supporting the nation’s broader recycling ecosystem. General Manager Mere Rakoroi explained that the hotel’s sustainability initiatives are guided by the Reddy Foundation, which ensures that environmental commitments lead to substantial, measurable actions.

The PRF commended Tanoa Plaza Hotel’s proactive stance, illustrating how leadership from the private sector can instigate significant advancements in waste reduction and environmental sustainability. This commendable example serves as an inspiration, highlighting the potential for the hospitality industry to lead the charge in environmental stewardship while making a tangible impact in their communities.
