Tanoa Plaza Hotel in Suva has made significant strides in sustainable waste management over the past decade, successfully diverting around 32 tonnes of recyclables from the Naboro landfill. This commendable effort has been recognized by Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd (WRFL), which collaborated with the hotel to facilitate effective recycling practices.

Amitesh Deo, founder of WRFL and the Pacific Recycling Foundation (PRF), highlighted the hotel’s effective segregation of recyclables, positioning it as a leader in environmental responsibility. “Tanoa Plaza Hotel has demonstrated that urban hotels can indeed make a significant impact in waste management and environmental sustainability,” Deo remarked. He noted that the hotel’s long-term commitment to recycling not only reduces waste but also inspires other businesses and communities to take proactive steps for the environment.

In addition to recycling efforts, Tanoa Plaza Hotel has adopted several practical sustainability initiatives. The establishment has embraced a garden-to-table approach, utilizing its limited garden space to grow fresh produce for its menus, thereby promoting healthier and more sustainable dining options. Furthermore, the hotel has taken steps to minimize single-use plastics by replacing disposable water bottles with water dispensers located on each floor, balancing guest convenience with meaningful waste reduction.

The Tanoa Group has implemented an effective waste sorting program, featuring clearly labeled bins in guest areas, conference spaces, and staff zones, ensuring proper recycling while fostering environmental awareness among guests and staff. This consistency in practice encourages sustainable behaviors that extend beyond the hotel itself.

Tanoa Plaza Hotel’s collaboration with WRFL and PRF reflects a commitment that transcends its operations. In working together on various initiatives, the hotel actively supports programs aimed at raising awareness of recycling and reinforcing the roles of Collection Pillars of Recycling—individuals vital to Fiji’s recycling framework.

Mere Rakoroi, general manager of Tanoa Plaza Hotel, expressed gratitude for the partnership with PRF and WRFL, recognizing the support they provide in promoting responsible waste management. “Our journey begins with the Reddy Foundation, which channels our environmental and community responsibilities into impactful, measurable actions,” Rakoroi stated.

With these initiatives, Tanoa Plaza Hotel not only embodies a commitment to sustainability but also serves as a model for other tourist properties in Fiji and the broader Pacific region.
