Pacific Games gold medalist Hansel McCaig has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting a new national record in the men’s 100 meters medley. His impressive time of 57.31 seconds was accomplished during the World Aquatics Swimming Championships held in Budapest, Hungary last week.
McCaig was among three swimmers representing Fiji at the World Championships, alongside Marseleima Moss and U.S.-based competitor David Young. Notably, Young also made headlines by establishing a national record in the men’s 50m butterfly event during the same competition.
In addition to the athletes’ achievements, Fiji Swimming president Lucy Erasito and Eugene Panuve successfully presented their strategic plan to World Aquatics, outlining their vision for the organization over the next quadrennial period. This strategic plan was a result of nine months of collaboration with the International Federation through a mentorship program aimed at aligning Fiji Swimming with global standards and practices.
A workshop held with stakeholders in Fiji allowed for the refinement of the organization’s visions, missions, and values. The initiative has equipped Fiji Swimming with valuable insights and skills for effective teamwork and planning, while also highlighting common challenges faced by other national federations, regardless of their size.
Fiji Swimming’s statement expressed gratitude to both the previous and current boards for their foundational work and ongoing guidance, reiterating the commitment to prioritize the needs of their athletes above all else.
This moment not only marks a significant achievement for McCaig and his fellow swimmers but also reflects the progressive development of Fiji’s swimming governance. With a clear strategic plan in place, there is optimism for a bright future in Fiji swimming, promising growth and success for its athletes on both the national and international stages.
