The Sugar Research Institute of Fiji (SRIF) is conducting a series of trials to evaluate a new blend of fertilizers specifically designed for sugar cane farms. In a recent interview, SRIF CEO Dr. Vinesh Kumar shared insights about ongoing collaborations with South Pacific Fertilisers to assess the performance of fertilizer blends that were initially developed four decades ago.
Dr. Kumar explained that the institute is focused on testing the effectiveness of both new and existing fertilizers, including examining their impact on the sugar cane industry. He noted, “We are currently running a number of trials with SPF and fertilizer suppliers to determine whether these longstanding blends remain effective in today’s agricultural context.”
In addition to fertilizers, the study is also looking at the efficacy of current pesticides used by sugar cane growers. Dr. Kumar emphasized the importance of testing new formulations of fertilizers, herbicides, and weedicides to identify alternatives that can enhance both crop yield and environmental safety.
Moreover, the SRIF is extending its research initiatives in partnership with various government departments, including the Agriculture Department, the Health Ministry, and the Water Authority of Fiji. This collaborative approach aims to ensure that sugar cane farmers remain healthy and that agricultural practices do not compromise water quality in catchment areas.
This initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainable farming practices in Fiji, highlighting SRIF’s dedication to fostering both agricultural productivity and environmental conservation. The integration of innovative approaches and collaboration among different sectors may pave the way for advancements that support the future of Fiji’s sugar industry while addressing current challenges.
With ongoing research and development efforts, there is a hopeful outlook for the sustainability of the sugar cane sector in Fiji, demonstrating how science and collaboration can help revitalize an industry that is vital to the nation’s economy.
