The Fijian government is actively considering the establishment of a new sugar mill in Rakiraki, supported by interest from a Chinese delegation eager to invest in the project. Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for the Sugar Industry, indicated that discussions with potential investors are already underway, potentially leading to a pioneering public-private partnership for Fiji’s sugar sector.

Singh shared, “We have been visited by a Chinese delegation who are willing to assist the government in setting up a new sugar mill in Rakiraki. We see that they are serious about it, and as you know, our Prime Minister has been advocating for a mill in Rakiraki.” Although no formal agreements have been finalized, the talks have been promising and align with the government’s broader strategy to rejuvenate the sugar industry.

The proposed mill may be developed on the site of the previous Rakiraki mill. If deemed feasible, a Cabinet proposal will be presented in the coming months to advance the project further. Singh emphasized that such investment could mark a pivotal moment for the sugar industry, highlighting the government’s commitment to achieving long-term sustainability through strategic partnerships and infrastructure development.

Insights from previous discussions related to the sugar industry indicate that a new facility represents an opportunity to address longstanding production challenges, especially as the industry has suffered from a decline in output due to various factors. A proposed collaboration with a Chinese company was also mentioned, reflecting a growing interest in revitalizing Fiji’s agricultural landscape, aiming for enhanced efficiency and production capabilities.

This potential investment not only signifies the involvement of international partners but also encapsulates a hopeful vision for the future of the sugar sector in Fiji, focusing on bolstering local economies, creating job opportunities, and ultimately increasing production levels to meet local and regional demands for refined sugar, which is currently reliant on imports.
