The sugar industry is actively working to respond to the escalating threats posed by climate change, with key initiatives outlined by Charan Jeath Singh, the Minister for Sugar Industry. He emphasized the necessity for the industry to remain proactive to safeguard farmers’ livelihoods and ensure continued production.
Singh pointed out that significant strides are being made towards mechanization within the sector, highlighting the introduction of advanced sugarcane planters, fertilizer applicators, and harvesters. These innovations aim to enhance productivity while fostering better collaboration among farmers.
Additionally, government support has facilitated the integration of drone technology into farming practices for the application of fertilizers and herbicides, a move that aims to revolutionize agricultural efficiency in the sugar sector. Singh also discussed plans to reinstate the sugar railway system in various regions of Fiji. He acknowledged that while some rail systems are in place, improvements are essential. The current reliance on truck transport for sugarcane is costly, and optimizing transportation methods could result in increased earnings for farmers.
Farmers are encouraged to adopt these new technologies and leverage government programs that are designed to strengthen the sugar industry. By embracing innovation and collaborative efforts, there is a hopeful outlook for the future of sugar production in Fiji amidst the challenges presented by climate change.
