The Sugar Cane Growers Council (SCGC) has expressed appreciation for a new report on adaptation efforts within the sugar industry. Minister for Sugar Industry, Charan Jeath Singh, received the report from Dr. Vanessa Burns of the University of Sheffield. The SCGC stated that the report represents a timely intervention, detailing how cane farmers engage in often unseen labor due to environmental challenges, which are becoming increasingly hazardous and exhausting.
The report underscores the concept of “adaptation work,” highlighting that surviving and thriving under climate stress requires more than resilience — it demands extraordinary physical, mental, and emotional effort from farmers. The SCGC noted the importance of the collaborative spirit within the industry, pointing out the meaningful support from institutions like the SCGC and the Ministry of Sugar Industry.
The findings resonate with themes present in prior studies, which highlight the ongoing challenges within Fiji’s sugar sector, including climate-related impacts, labor shortages, and the need for sustainable practices. While these issues pose significant hurdles for farmers, there is a shared commitment amongst stakeholders to work toward a more resilient and sustainable future for the sugar industry in Fiji.
This outlook of cooperation and dedication among farmers and institutions signals a hopeful trajectory for the sector amidst adversity. Enhanced collaboration aimed at addressing the complex challenges within the industry can lead to innovative solutions and revitalization, ensuring that Fiji’s sugar industry continues to thrive as a critical part of the nation’s economy.
