Acting Prime Minister and Tourism Minister Viliame Gavoka addressed concerns regarding the declining public trust in the Government and institutions within Fiji. He recognized the difficulties faced but emphasized a positive outlook for the nation’s future.
“Institutions are essential in a parliamentary democracy like Fiji,” Gavoka remarked. He highlighted the supremacy of Parliament, noting that governance relies on institutions established under its authority. He cautioned that coups undermine Parliament and institutions, which negatively affects governance and public confidence.
Reflecting on Fiji’s journey since gaining independence 54 years ago, Gavoka acknowledged past setbacks but expressed pride in the resilience shown. “We have stumbled several times but have risen stronger from those experiences,” he stated.
Celebrating the nation’s freedom, Gavoka reiterated the importance of established institutions in sustaining that liberty. He concluded by commending the media’s role as a watchdog in Fiji, affirming that the future appears bright with institutions firmly in place.
