Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has made it clear that Fiji will not intervene in Indonesia’s sovereignty over West Papua. During his recent official visit to Indonesia, which garnered attention from Free West Papua Movement activists, Rabuka emphasized that this issue is one for the Indonesian government to address, while expressing his sympathy for the people living in West Papua.
Drawing a comparison to the situation in Rotuma, an island area that sought independence post-1987, Rabuka highlighted the importance of sovereign integrity. He stated, “That is the matter for Indonesia to deal with although we feel for the Melanesian kinsman the West Papua; it is part of Indonesia, just like Rotuma is part of Fiji.”
On September 7, 2023, the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) appointed Rabuka and Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister James Marape as special envoys to engage in dialogue with Indonesia regarding West Papua. In previous attempts during their tenure, the two leaders had expressed disappointment in not being able to secure a meeting with former Indonesian President Joko Widodo to discuss this issue.
Rabuka extended a formal invitation to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto for a visit to Fiji, though details regarding their discussions on the sensitive West Papua matter have not been disclosed.
This diplomatic initiative underlines Fiji’s commitment to a careful and respectful approach to regional issues, reflecting its historical relationship with Indonesia, which has shown support for Fiji during its own political challenges. Rabuka’s stance suggests a desire to foster peace and collaboration between nations, while prioritizing the importance of sovereignty and diplomatic engagement over conflict.
As Fiji continues to strengthen its ties with Indonesia, this dialogue holds potential for constructive outcomes and deeper cooperation in addressing broader regional challenges. By focusing on mutual respect, Rabuka’s approach reinforces an optimistic view of future relations among Melanesian nations.
