Fiji Men’s 7s captain Jerry Tuwai expressed that the standards established by both the men’s and women’s teams during the 2024 Paris Olympics could serve as inspiration for the nation and the youth aspiring to represent Fiji. Tuwai made these comments at a welcoming ceremony organized by the Fiji Rugby Union on August 4, 2024, at the Tanoa International Hotel in Nadi, attended by family and friends.

Acknowledging the outcome that fell short of expectations, Tuwai remained optimistic about the team’s potential to rise again. He expressed gratitude to God for the protection and guidance during their preparations leading up to the Olympics and after their return. Tuwai also thanked the coaches, management, and team members who dedicated themselves to defending their nation at the Olympic Games.

He conveyed appreciation to their families and supporters, acknowledging the sacrifices made during their month away from loved ones. The Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, praised both the Fiji 7s and Fijiana 7s teams for their performances and extended thanks to the coaches and management for their support throughout the tournament.

Fiji Rugby Football Union Trust Board interim chairman Peter Mazey described the gathering as a celebration of the extraordinary achievements that brought pride to Fiji. He noted that the team’s performance in Paris reflected the heart, resilience, skill, and determination characteristic of Fijian rugby. Each point scored and every tackle made showcased the strength of Fijian culture and inspired future generations of athletes.

Mazey highlighted the historical significance of winning a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games. He expressed gratitude to the coaching staff, medical team, and everyone involved for their unwavering commitment, emphasizing that their hard work has not gone unnoticed.

As the teams returned, Mazey urged everyone to see the silver medal not just as an accolade but as a symbol of dedication and sacrifice. He stressed the importance of viewing this achievement as a stepping stone for future successes, encouraging continued support for the teams to maintain Fiji’s status as a rugby powerhouse. Mazey concluded by wishing the teams well for the future and advised them to take time to rest and recharge.
