Fiji’s Silent Killer: The NCD Crisis You Need to Know About

Fiji is currently grappling with a significant health crisis, as Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) account for 80 percent of all deaths in the nation and 40 percent of premature deaths, according to Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu, the Minister for Health and Medical Services.

These concerning figures highlight global trends, with the World Health Organization (WHO) reporting that NCDs lead to 71 percent of all global deaths, particularly affecting low- and middle-income countries such as Fiji. The United Nations further indicates that 85 percent of premature NCD deaths occur in these regions.

In Fiji, the leading causes of death include circulatory diseases, diabetes, and cancer, impacting both genders. The Republic of Fiji Vital Statistics Report from 2016 to 2021 underscores the seriousness of the issue, as NCDs surpass other causes of death across different age groups.

The healthcare system in Fiji faces a heavy burden, with the economic impact of NCD-related deaths and disabilities estimated at 591 million Fijian dollars in 2019 alone. The primary contributors to this crisis are known: unhealthy diets, tobacco use, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol consumption. Dr. Lalabalavu has pointed out that these risk factors can be modified.

Other countries have effectively tackled NCDs through strategic initiatives that Fiji could emulate. For example, Finland launched a nationwide campaign to reduce salt intake, resulting in lower rates of hypertension. Australia’s strict tobacco regulations, such as plain packaging and high taxation, have led to a significant decrease in smoking prevalence. Similarly, Mexico’s introduction of a sugar tax caused a 7.6 percent decline in sugary drink consumption within the first two years.

Fiji’s Wellness Division is actively collecting important data to facilitate health promotion and prevention strategies. Nonetheless, combating the NCD crisis will necessitate a collaborative effort, robust policy measures, and heightened public awareness.

To secure a healthier future, it is crucial to make informed choices about health today.
