The Fiji Police Force, in collaboration with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service, made a significant seizure on March 17, 2025, confiscating 600 rounds of ammunition and one firearm aboard the MV Malau vessel. This operation was confirmed by Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu, who has assigned a dedicated team to further investigate the matter.

Commissioner Tudravu highlighted the necessity of coordinating with Tongan authorities to ensure the documentation related to the shipment is accurate. “We are liaising closely with the Tongan authorities. Right now, it is confirming and verifying the documents. We know that due diligence was done from their end; however, we are working to verify these things,” he stated.

There are ongoing investigations into possible connections between the firearm and a prominent high chief. However, further details remain undisclosed as inquiries progress.

This incident raises serious concerns regarding arms-related activities in the region, reflecting a troubling trend noted in previous reports that indicated a rise in illegal arms linked to notable social figures and a potential lapse in compliance with firearm regulations.

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka commended the collaborative efforts of the Fiji Navy and other relevant authorities in this successful operation, expressing the government’s commitment to protecting national security and combating illegal trafficking in Fiji’s waters.

As the investigation unfolds, the continuing cooperation among authorities and active community engagement is essential. There is optimism that these concerted efforts will lead to a safer environment for all Fijians, underscoring the necessity for vigilant border control and adherence to national laws.
