Fiji’s Schools Set for Major Overhaul: What’s in Store?

Vatuwaqa Primary and Suva Primary schools in Fiji are set to be a priority in the Ministry of Education’s plans for infrastructure upgrades, with plans for rebuilding funded in the upcoming 2025-2026 National Budget. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro has emphasized the urgent need for renovations due to the deteriorating condition of the schools, which have suffered from aging facilities and overcrowding.

Radrodro stated, “We are committed to ensuring that all children in Fiji have access to safe, well-equipped schools that support learning and development.” Both schools have a long history in the capital, serving diverse communities but now face challenges including outdated sanitation facilities and a lack of learning resources.

The situation at Vatuwaqa Primary School has been particularly concerning, having experienced a devastating fire in December 2022 that destroyed multiple classrooms and facilities. Following the fire, affected students and staff were relocated to nearby schools to minimize disruption. This incident underlined the urgent necessity for infrastructure improvements.

A broader governmental initiative is currently underway to uplift educational facilities throughout Fiji, with new construction at various schools, including the recent completion of a secondary school facility in Tailevu. The Minister pointed out that the success of renovation projects showcases the government’s commitment to enhancing student experiences, with comprehensive strategies aimed at improving material conditions and educational outcomes for children across Fiji.

The National Budget set to be released later this year is expected to allocate significant funding towards these critical projects, reasserting education’s priority in government spending. Minister Radrodro concluded with a strong message about the importance of providing every child in Fiji access to a supportive learning environment, bringing optimism for the future of the country’s educational landscape.

This commitment is a hopeful sign that positive changes are on the horizon, as the government and community stakeholders work collaboratively towards creating better learning conditions for Fiji’s youth.
