A recent assessment of schools in the Suva-Nausori corridor reveals a critical crisis in educational infrastructure. Out of 86 schools evaluated, 14 have been flagged for urgent intervention due to severe challenges such as overcrowding, inadequate sanitation, and unsafe structural conditions. The government-commissioned report, supported by Australia, highlights that 40 schools are also identified as high-priority for upgrades, while 32 additional schools require infrastructure improvements that management committees should address.
Overcrowding is a significant concern, influencing 40% of the evaluation score, as many classrooms exceed capacity limits, resulting in students learning in cramped, poorly ventilated spaces. Furthermore, water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities are under significant strain, with numerous schools failing to meet essential student-to-toilet ratios. The report also points to structural integrity issues, lack of disability access, and insufficient disaster preparedness, indicating widespread maintenance failures across many institutions.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka underscores the importance of these findings for Fiji’s National Development Plan, emphasizing that every child deserves access to quality education within a secure learning environment. The Prime Minister noted that the report identifies necessary actions to inform the Education Master Infrastructure Plan to ensure that existing schools continue to serve students effectively while long-term solutions are being developed.
The outgoing Australian High Commissioner, Ewen McDonald, has called for swift action to address the alarming conditions, stating that the report offers valuable baseline information for making informed decisions regarding future support. The assessment categorizes schools into three priority levels: those needing immediate intervention, those needing upgrades to meet standards, and those that are structurally sound but still require investment.
