The Ministry of Education in Fiji has successfully installed Starlink satellite internet at six rural schools located in the hinterlands of Viti Levu. These schools, which include Nakorosule District School, Naivucini District School, Naboro Sawanikula School, Lewa Seventh Day Adventist Primary School, Nawaisomo Primary School, and Natutale District School, are now equipped with high-speed and low-latency internet access. This connectivity will enable the schools to conduct virtual lessons, access digital learning platforms, and utilize cloud-based applications.

A statement from the Ministry highlights that this initiative is driven by the Coalition Government’s commitment to equitable digital access, ensuring that students in remote areas are not left behind in the digital age. The project aligns with global efforts, such as those spearheaded by organizations like UNICEF, aiming to connect every school globally to the internet by the year 2030. The Ministry further emphasized that by empowering students and strengthening communities, Fiji is building a digitally inclusive future.

The installations were completed in a swift three-day process through a partnership with Lightspeed, an authorized Starlink reseller. This rollout is part of a broader vision to ensure all students in Fiji have access to quality education, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

The completion of these installations not only enhances the educational experience for students but also symbolizes a significant step towards bridging the digital divide. It reflects the government’s commitment to improve connectivity, which is essential for socio-economic development in isolated regions.

This initiative echoes previous government efforts to enhance internet access in remote areas, including planned expansions for further connectivity through additional Starlink services. Such developments are vital in promoting educational opportunities and ensuring that even the most isolated communities benefit from modern technology, thus nurturing hope for a brighter and more connected future in Fiji.
