The focus on developing rural and maritime areas in Fiji is being positioned as a critical national duty rather than merely another government initiative. Mosese Bulitavu, the newly appointed Rural and Maritime Development Minister, emphasized the importance of beginning his term by engaging with rural communities. He expressed that this approach is both intentional and symbolic.
During a multi-stakeholder consultation on the national rural development policy held at the Fiji Football Academy in Labasa, Bulitavu stated, “There is no more meaningful way to begin this journey than by listening, building partnerships, and shaping the future of rural and maritime Fiji together.” He acknowledged the significant responsibility of his role, highlighting the vital role rural and maritime communities play in Fiji’s identity, economy, and resilience. These areas are not only home to the country’s natural resources but also to its food systems, culture, and traditional governance structures.
The ongoing consultation is part of a comprehensive effort to establish Fiji’s first national rural development policy, which will serve as a central framework for the government to plan, coordinate, and deliver services to rural and outer island communities. Bulitavu noted that this policy is crucial for guiding how ministries collaborate, prioritizing funding, and measuring development outcomes.
He assured that the policy will also address persistent challenges faced in rural areas, ensuring that national plans align with the realities experienced at provincial and village levels. This proactive approach signals a hopeful commitment to empowering rural communities and facilitating sustainable development that resonates with their unique needs.
