Fiji’s rugby sevens team achieved a strong comeback in their first Pool C match of the Vancouver 7s, defeating Uruguay 38-12 at BC Place Stadium. This victory comes as a redemption after losing to the South American side in the Perth 7s last month. Fiji initially faced challenges as Uruguay struck first, scoring two quick tries and taking a 12-0 lead early in the match.
Despite being down early, Fiji turned the tide after Waisea Nacuqu was reinstated following a yellow card. Terio Veilawa ignited Fiji’s resurgence with a try in the sixth minute, followed by another try from Sevuloni Mocenacagi before halftime. With Veilawa converting one of those tries, the teams went into the break at a tied score of 12-12.
Fiji ramped up their performance in the second half, showcasing an impressive offensive strategy that resulted in four additional tries from Joji Nasova, Joseva Talacolo, Filipe Sauturaga, and Sakiusa Siqila. Veilawa contributed two more conversions, bringing his total to three for the match, alongside another conversion from Siqila.
This win not only signifies a recovery for Fiji after their previous encounter with Uruguay but also builds momentum as they prepare to face the USA in their next match at 12:45pm. The team can use this victory as a stepping stone to bolster their confidence and continue displaying their elite skills in forthcoming games.
Fiji’s ability to adapt following setbacks shows their resilience and strength, promising an exciting pathway as they pursue success in the tournament. Fans have reason to be optimistic about Fiji’s prospects as they continue their campaign.
