Te mo Mayanavanua, a lock for the Flying Fijians, is set to join the Fijian Drua as the latest addition to their roster. Currently, he is playing for the Northampton Saints in England. The club has confirmed that Mayanavanua will depart this summer to pursue opportunities closer to home in Fiji.
At 27 years old, Mayanavanua made his debut for the Flying Fijians in 2020 during a match against Georgia. He previously spent three years playing in New Zealand for Northland before moving to France to join Lyon, followed by his time in England.
This move is part of a larger trend, with numerous Fijian players transitioning back from European clubs to domestic teams. Notably, around 22 Fijian players are leaving French Top 14 clubs, many having reached the end of their contracts. Significant transfers include Flying Fijians captain Waisea Nayacalevu leaving Toulon for Sale Sharks, and Inia Tabuavou moving from Racing 92 to the Fijian Drua for the upcoming Super Rugby Pacific season.
The influx of talent returning to Fiji is promising for domestic rugby, signaling a revitalized commitment to local teams and an opportunity to build a strong foundation for the future of Fijian rugby. The prospect of these players returning to their roots not only strengthens the Fijian Drua but also inspires young athletes in Fiji to pursue rugby at higher levels.
