The Fiji Water Flying Fijians are actively enhancing their preparations for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, with head coach Mick Byrne aiming to reveal at least 80% of the squad by January of next year. Currently, Byrne is in Europe assessing Fijian players in their respective clubs to facilitate an informed selection process.

In a recent Zoom interview, Byrne highlighted that 2025 will be a pivotal transition year for the national team. He emphasized the importance of players’ performances in various leagues, such as France’s ProD2, which will heavily influence squad selections. The Flying Fijians are set to compete in nine test matches this year, starting with a notable game against the Wallabies on July 6, followed by a home match against Scotland in Suva on July 12.

Byrne is keen on discovering emerging talents who could potentially surprise the rugby world as “bolters,” meaning players who unexpectedly excel leading up to the World Cup. He confirmed that all players based in Europe would be available during the international window come July.

A significant aspect of the selection process involves three former All Blacks: Hoskins Sotutu, Pita Gus-Sowakula, and George Bower. Recent changes in international rugby eligibility rules have opened up chances for these players to join the Fijian squad. However, Byrne acknowledged that their existing contracts with New Zealand rugby could pose challenges, especially since many restrict participation outside of the All Blacks. Nonetheless, players like Sowakula, currently competing in France’s Top 14, could become vital assets for Fiji if they continue to perform well.

This ongoing adaptability reflects a wider trend in rugby, where athletes are increasingly seeking opportunities to honor their heritage through international representation. This aligns well with Byrne’s inclusive approach to scouting talent from various leagues, moving beyond traditional rugby powerhouses.

As the team prepares for upcoming international fixtures, fans can look forward to a vibrant blend of seasoned players and promising newcomers. This strategic focus on squad development and proactive selection showcases a hopeful trajectory for Fijian rugby as they strive for excellence on the global stage ahead of the World Cup.
