Fiji’s Minister for Immigration, Viliame Naupoto, has been appointed as the Chair of the Second Asia-Pacific Regional Review of the Global Compact for Migration (GCM), which is taking place in Bangkok, Thailand, from February 4 to February 6, 2025. This three-day conference gathers representatives from governments, policymakers, and various stakeholders throughout the Asia-Pacific region to assess the progress made in implementing the UN Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration.
During the event, Minister Naupoto participated as a panellist in a High-Level Panel focused on Regular Pathways for Migration. He emphasized the significance of establishing structured migration opportunities that promote safer and more sustainable cross-border movement.
In his opening statement, Naupoto highlighted the essential task of evaluating the GCM’s progress in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. He noted that the discussions during this conference would play a pivotal role in shaping the agenda for the upcoming International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) scheduled for 2026.
The conference aims to influence regional strategies related to migration governance, enhance labor mobility, and advocate for the rights of migrants, while also confronting new challenges and identifying best practices in global migration trends. Overall, this initiative reflects a commitment to improving the conditions and policies surrounding international migration, setting the stage for a more comprehensive and cooperative approach to migration in the Asia-Pacific region.
This effort may foster a hopeful outlook for the future, as nations work together to create safer and more structured migration pathways that could enhance the lives of many individuals seeking opportunities abroad.
