The Land Transport Authority (LTA) of Fiji has ramped up its efforts to enhance road safety by taking strong measures against reckless driving. Between January and December 9, 2024, the LTA has revoked 62 driver licenses and suspended an additional 21 licenses due to irresponsible behavior on the roads.
LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa reported that the LTA conducted 107 counseling sessions at various branches to address the actions of drivers exhibiting unsafe habits. During these sessions, 1,366 first warnings, 297 second warnings, and 155 final warnings were issued to help reinforce the importance of responsible driving.
Rokosawa emphasized that these sessions are part of the LTA’s ongoing mission to educate drivers about their duties on the road and to deter dangerous driving behaviors. Furthermore, he noted that 39 client IDs were suspended for severe violations, and one case is currently under audit.
“The actions we take reflect our zero-tolerance policy towards misconduct,” Rokosawa stated. “We are dedicated to making roads safer for everyone.” He added that the Authority will continue to take stringent measures against repeat offenders.
These initiatives are not simply punitive; they aim to save lives and prevent accidents. By holding reckless drivers accountable and removing them from the roads, the LTA believes it can significantly decrease the number of traffic-related incidents that can be avoided.
“This is about much more than fines; every canceled or suspended license reduces the potential danger on our roads. We want all drivers to recognize their vital responsibility to themselves and others sharing the road,” he concluded.
In summary, the LTA is actively pursuing a safer environment for all road users through stringent actions combined with education, reflecting a significant shift toward prioritizing public safety in Fiji.
This proactive stance on road safety is expected to foster a greater sense of community responsibility among drivers, ultimately contributing to a safer driving culture in Fiji. It serves as a reminder that road safety is a shared responsibility and that everyone’s actions can contribute to a positive street environment.
